CARING contributes to ENCePP survey of methodologies for European Union publicly funded multi-database safety studies

The European Network of Centres for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance (ENCePP) Working Group on data sources and multi-database studies has published the results of their survey of methodologies for European Union publicly funded multi-database safety studies. CARING was one of the 18 research consortia that participated in the study.

Key points in the report are:

The European Network of Centres for Pharmacoepidemiology and Pharmacovigilance ENCePP, an initiative coordinated by the European Medicines Agency, is a network of research institutions with expertise in pharmacoepidemiology and pharmacovigilance. The overall aims of the network are to build capacity, develop methodological guidance, raise standards and facilitate the conduct of multi-centre, independent, post-authorisation studies of medicinal products.

The ENCePP Working Group on data sources and multi-source studies seeks to describe methodological approaches and processes for combining and sharing of electronic healthcare data sources. As a first step, a survey has been conducted of research coordinators of a number of European publicly funded projects aimed at carrying out international multi-database drug-safety studies.

The results of the present survey overall highlight the heterogeneity of the methods used and the variation in approaches to selecting databases to conduct research. Further research is needed to compare and identify the better among these.
